Once optimization was done, I was then able to use disk utilities to install a new OS, which turned out just to be the Sierra download that started all the hardships. All data was saved, nothing was lost, no settings changed. Recently I started using Boxen, which takes over homebrew. I had to re-install R from source using homebrew, and it now exists in my Boxen Cellar location. Now RStudio no longer launches, saying 'Unable to locate R binary by scanning standard locations'. I tried reinstalling RStudio (I needed to upgrade anyway) but that didn't help.
Receiving the error: unable to locate r binary by scanning standard locations when trying to open Rstudio on my Mac. I have mac osx. I just downloaded Rstudio - Mac-OS X 10.6+ from rstudio.com
In the terminal the code ls -l /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/ gives me 'no such file or directory'

You don't have the R compiler installed.Rstudio does not download it by default.

Then restart R studio and it is going to work!!
